Guide to Christmas Markets in London

Posted: Dec 12 2014

Winter is the time when you want to sit at home and turn the boiler up and stay toasty, but have you done your Christmas shopping yet? If you want to find the perfect pressie head over to one of London’s many Christmas markets and fairs! They are a brilliant way to tap into your community and find goodies that you might not find in High Street shops. Just walking around one of these seasonal marvels will give you a warm and Christmassy feeling and for those who want to see more of London and its different quarters they are a great excuse to explore new territory.

There is no shortage of seasonal markets taking place throughout the 32 boroughs of the Capital and, as one of the foremost teaching agencies in London, SANZA is committed to providing our teachers and support staff with opportunities to make the most of their leisure time while working in such a fascinating city.  This is our guide to the places offering a cool Yule shopping experience amid interesting and atmospheric surroundings :

More London Christmas Market
If you are in Central London then try the More London Christmas Market which runs until the 21st December and is located on the south side of the river between Tower Bridge and HMS Belfast. Admission is free and there are all sorts of handmade and homemade goodies for sale. Many of the stalls specialise in handmade jewellery, clothing and food.  Even if you have already done your festive shopping this market is still a great place to visit. The view across the Thames from this vantage point is terrific with the Tower of London and Tower Bridge among the iconic landmarks on view. For anyone new to London it is one of the best places to stroll around, soak up the atmosphere and take in the impressive panorama.

Barbican Market
Another Thameside venue that boasts a Christmas market is the Barbican Market at Silk Street which runs from the 12th to the 22nd December. The focus of this indoor market is very much on arts and crafts with vintage and designer clothing, books, toys and all sorts of other goodies available.

Canary Wharf Christmas Market
East London’s Canary Wharf Christmas Market can be found at Montgomery Square in the regenerated Docklands district and will remain open until Christmas Eve. Here you can find toys, handmade goods, oil paintings and lots of other curios and craft items to suit all budgets. Again admission is free. Few who do not live or work in the area visit this beautiful and modern part of London so the market is a great opportunity to look around this area of gleaming towers including three of the tallest buildings in the UK.

Chelsea Christmas Gift Fair
In West London, the Chelsea Christmas Gift Fair takes place at the Old Town Hall this weekend. Although there is a small admission fee this is an ideal and charming backdrop for a Christmas themed event and worth visiting. Clothes, food and toys are among the many items that are available. Located on the famous Kings Road in the heart of Chelsea this trendy area is a magnet for those seeking the latest fashions.

Shopping in London is one of the many exciting attractions that the Capital has to offer and we hope that our shortlist adds to the festive enjoyment of our teachers. If you are a teacher living in Australia, New Zealand or Canada and would like to experience what the UK has to offer then get in touch with SANZA.
