DECEMBER - Things to do in London

Posted: Dec 01 2015

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas in London. With the festive season in the air, there’s even more to see and do in the capital. With so much going on, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed! We’ve put together a guide to some of the most important events in December to help you to make the most of this action-packed month!

The Chocolate Festival – 4th 5th & 6th December

Perfectly timed for Christmas, the chocolate festival will be happening in the Business Design Centre again this year. There will be plenty of free samples from some of the best chocolatiers and artisanal chocolate producers in the country, as well as plenty of opportunities to pick up a great Christmas gift… even if it’s for you! For more information of this year’s exhibitors a full list is available on their website.

Winter at Southbank Centre – 20th November until 17th January

If you go to Southbank centre this December, you’ll be treated to a real celebration of the festive season. With a huge range of events happening, there’s something for everyone at Southbank Centre this December: see the burlesque, cabaret and circus extravaganza ‘La Soirée’; find the perfect gift at the winter market; sample the best in seasonal food and drink; or take in concerts by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. For a full list of the wide variety of great events happening at Southbank centre this December, visit their site here.

Winterville – 26th November until 23rd December

Coming to Victoria Park for its second year, Winterville is a free-to-enter Christmas festival with a range of different attractions, offering an East –London answer to the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland (find out more about that in our earlier post here).  Attractions include an ice rink, circus, pantomime and a fairground. More grown up attractions come in the form of comedy, cabaret, theatre and live music as well as the pub and food traders to be found in the ‘town square’. For a quieter experience, visit the Winter Night Garden: a cinema in the style of an enchanted forest which will be showcasing festive films.

Hogwarts in the Snow – 13th November until 31st January

Winter has come to Hogwarts! Visit the Warner Bros. studio tour before the end of January to see a very different version of the world’s most famous school of witchcraft and wizardry! The studio tour includes replicas of some of the most iconic sets from the films, now with a Christmas feel. Experience the impressive great hall, fully decorated and laid out for a festive feast. See some of the series’ most recognisable props, including for the first time this year, the Goblet of Fire which now on display. Click here to find out more and book tickets direct.

Peter Pan Cup – 25th December

Life in London is all-go even on Christmas Day! In a tradition that’s over 150 years old, members of the Serpentine Swimming club will meet to race in the freezing waters of the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park. The race is only open to club members that have qualified, but spectators are welcome. Even then, it’s not for the faint of heart, wrapping up warmly is very much encouraged!

London’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks – 31st December

See the year off with a bang with the UK’s largest annual fireworks display! This fireworks show is world-famous and not to be missed. Starting with the London signature of the bongs of Big Ben, and ending with a huge blaze of fireworks from The London eye, you won’t see this kind of show anywhere else. The best views are from official viewing areas, tickets go on-sale on 3rd December and you can get them here!

That’s not all, as well as the big events London will be getting a Christmas makeover with plenty of lights, decorations and places to find festive food and drink; as well as temporary ice skating rinks popping up across the city such as at Somerset House and the Natural History Museum.
